With all the stress going on in the world around us, it’s important to have a respite. An outdoor living space allows you to take in the peace and solitude of the natural world, unwind after a long day, and reconnect with your loved ones. Whether you’re working from home, raising the little ones, or making a daily commute, luxurious outdoor living space is worth its weight in tranquility. If you’ve been dreaming of creating your own outdoor oasis but are unsure how to start, here’s what you need to know:

1. Select Your Space

The first step to creating the outdoor area of your dreams is envisioning its size and location. Most people choose a spot nearby the back or front door. This makes it more convenient to sneak outside for five minutes here and there. If you have existing pavers or a deck, it will make designing the space a little easier.

Want a little more of an escape from reality? Choose a spot in the far corner of your backyard.

Once you decide on a location, go to your proposed spot with a measuring tape and begin mapping out the area. To get an accurate measurement, envision when you’ll spend time in your outdoor living space, with whom, and what you will be doing. Allot enough space for all the people and activities you love.

2. Choose Comfortable, Attractive Furniture

Once you know how much space you have to work with, you can begin shopping for furniture. Choose pieces that feel comfortable and make you smile. Be sure to allow for enough room to comfortably walk around the furniture within the space.

You don’t have to pay a small fortune for your outdoor furniture. Shop second-hand stores, vintage shops, and estate sales. Be inventive and have fun. Outdoor areas offer exceptional inspiration and no limitations on design inspiration.

Once your furniture makes it home, position it in a way to define the space. Create a conversation area with the seating facing inward.

3. Get Lit

When choosing and installing lights for your outdoor escape, choose warm-toned bulbs, string lights, and candles. Harsh floodlights can really put a damper on the atmosphere.

If you selected an area further from your house, consider lighting the path with path lights.

Don’t have outdoor outlets? Use solar string lights.

4. Don’t Forget the Textiles

Your outdoor living space should offer a hint of hygge. You already have the candles and natural elements, now you just need some cozy comforts like a throw blanket, throw pillows, and an outdoor rug. (Your outdoor rug with further define the space).

One question that always comes up is, “Do I need to use outdoor fabrics?” You do want to invest in an outdoor rug since you won’t be rolling it up for storage. However, you can keep your pillows and throw blankets in a water-tight storage chest if they’re not outdoor-grade.

5. Don’t Forget to Add Touches That Make It Your Own

When it comes to your backyard oasis, you want to add your style, flair, and creativity to it. To do this, consider finding unique additions like a stained glass window or a windchime. If you want to make your space more dynamic, you can install a bird feeder, raised garden bed for herbs and flowers, or a fish pond.

6. Don’t Forget to Freshen Things Up

To truly make your outdoor living space worthy of your time, you will want to keep it fresh by changing out live plants, flower arrangements, and candles. Most people also replace their rug every year or every other year.
