New York City is unique, exciting, and awe-inspiring. I have always found the beauty of the lights and lines of the city invigorating. Not only is NYC the capital for fashion and design, but for me, the city embodies hope and resilience. With all this in mind, the 2 Waterline Square project gave me the opportunity to reflect on the past while keeping an eye on the future. And, as the new year approaches and the project came to fruition, I feel lucky to have reconnected with the energy, fervor, and optimism of NYC.
If you want to capture the beauty and excitement of NYC, you can. I am happy to share my insight on creating a sensational design based in a New York state of mind.
Lines, Light, and Liminal Space
New York City’s beauty lies in the lines of the buildings and skyline, the sparkle of the lights, and the spaces between. Throughout 2 Waterline Square, lines play a vital role in defining space. From the bathroom vanity to the bedroom, this design plays on the pull and push of vertical and horizontal lines.
In addition to the impact of lines, I love how the light in this space dances and plays throughout the space. The soft lighting balances the bold lines of the space. And what better to come home to after a long day in the city, than gentle lighting from striking fixtures?
When we talk about design, we often focus on how furniture fills the space. But I urge you to look at the space between. Does your design have room to breathe? In a New York City apartment, space is at a premium. So, furniture must balance and define the space.
Have Fun with Scale, Color, and Textures
One of the most inspirational aspects of designing in NYC is capturing the history, diversity of thought, and maximalism of the city. Don’t be afraid to play with scale through decor choice, like the oversized lamps that flank the lux entertainment center in the living room of 2 Waterline.
Let art capture the imagination and fill the room with color and beauty. One of my favorite elements in the 2 Waterline Square design is the artwork. This Warhol triptych speaks to the progressive energy of New York along with its colorful history and abundance. While the other pieces play on near and far away adventures.
When you plan your space, do not forget to include varying textures. Lean into contrasting textures and patterns. Consider combining organic, earthy textures with geometric and clean patterns.
Don’t Forget the Details
Ultimately, details make a space unique and special. Creating the opportunity for intimacy, conversation, and memories is one of my favorite things to do. Two armchairs angled inward, place settings with blown glass, hand-crafted dishes, and an elegant, one-of-a-kind cloth napkin are all elements designed to bring people together. When you invest in the details, you create depth and opulence. Details create layers, wonder, and purpose.
